EXTRA CURRICULAR

MUSIC

Music plays an integral part of life at Repton Prep and this is immediately obvious when visiting our Charles Jennings Music School. With two dedicated performance spaces – one indoor and one outdoor – as well as 11 practice suites, any musical passion can be pursued.

Our thriving music department is supported by 21 professional musicians offering over 300 lessons a week to pupils across all ages, abilities, instruments and musical genres. Tailored individual music programmes are developed for every child so that we can ensure that they work at their own pace and achieve their potential. We prepare pupils for the ABRS Music examinations at school and are extremely proud of how well our pupils perform in these demanding exams.

MUSIC AS PART OF THE CURRICULUM

From Nursery through to Year 8 all pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of classroom and extra-curricular music activities. Experience, fulfilment and enjoyment for all important, but ultimately we want to nurture inquisitive young people with a passion for music in addition to aspiring to achieving formal examinations.

All Prep School pupils receive weekly class music lessons as part of the formal curriculum, in which a broad syllabus is covered, including music from a variety of genres and cultures. Pupils also study ABRSM theory, composition and how to notate music. Once their compositions are well developed they go on to use the specialist music notation software, Sibelius.

EXPERIENCING the joy of PERFORMANCE

Our well-established orchestras, choirs and wind bands along with numerous smaller ensembles including a brass band, jazz band, guitar ensemble, percussion ensemble, string quartets, string orchestras and flute ensembles bring many children within our community the sheer joy of performing as part of a group. We know that inviting children to do this from an early age builds confidence and supports many other areas of their learning, as well as life beyond school.

Our whole-school House Music competition, where the whole school along with parents gather in Repton’s historic Pears School, is one of the most-loved creative experiences of our calendar year. Each term is peppered with other opportunities for parents to watch their children perform in informal as well as more formal events. These include our own concerts at School, including the Christmas Carol Concert and our Harvest Festival at St Saviour’s Church Foremark, as well as external concerts such as:

  • Remembrance Day performance at National Memorial Arboretum
  • Lunchtime concerts at Derby Cathedral with Repton pupils
  • Project String Quartet at Repton’s Beldham Hall
  • The Lichfield Festival
  • The Grantham Festival

MUSIC beyond REPTON PREP

We are delighted when pupils achieve musical success beyond Repton Prep. Each year we celebrate pupils who are accepted into the National Children's Orchestra, the National Youth Harp Orchestra, the National Children's Choir and the National Youth Choir along with several who successfully audition to enjoy and benefit from Pro Corda courses.

Repton School regularly hosts music workshops for Prep pupils , as well as a professional concert series which sees artists of national repute visiting the school each term to perform as well as hold inspirational masterclasses.
